BALANCING SOCIAL, FINANCIAL AND STRATEGIC PRIORITIES IN DECISION-MAKING in CRECER (Bolivia)
Crédito con Educación Rural (CRECER) has developed an effective approach to adjusting its products and services that emphasises social, financial and strategic priorities. Decisions are weighed against a matrix which includes:

Social concerns

  • Giving back benefits to the client
  • Meeting client needs
  • Servicing more clients in less-serviced locations
  • Measuring changes generated in the lives of clients
  • Caring for human resources

Financial concerns

  • Maintaining competitive financial performance
  • Generating economies of scale
  • Improving efficiency and productivity
  • Cheaper money for the poorest

Strategic concerns

  • Leading the microfinance market
  • Compliance with the vision and mission
  • Mandate of the Assembly and Board
  • Balancing social and financial performance

ALIGNING DECISION-MAKING TO SOCIAL GOALS in Pro Mujer (Bolivia)
Pro Mujer Bolivia has developed an effective approach to ensuring that decision-making balances both its social and financial priorities. Strategic and operational planning starts at the branch level using Annual Operative Plans, which are consolidated at the organisational level to determine overall strategy. Based on these, decision-making at all levels reflects the degree to which the action: 1) supports the social mission, 2) supports institutional sustainability, and 3) generates value to clients and their families. In this way, PMB seeks to balance its social and financial performance.
