Green Design

A. Definition

Green Design refers to the creation of products, buildings, or systems that minimize environmental harm through sustainable material choices, energy efficiency, and long-term durability. It goes beyond aesthetics to integrate environmental responsibility into every aspect of design.

B. Main Features

Green Design emphasizes renewable materials, minimal waste generation, and energy-efficient production. It supports passive energy systems in architecture, low-toxicity materials, and consideration of a productfs full life cycle. The concept aligns closely with sustainable consumption and eco-efficiency.

C. Case Studies and Examples

  1. Interface Inc. - Developed carpet tiles using recyclable materials and closed-loop production under its gMission Zeroh initiative.
  2. Foster + Partners (Architecture) - Designed buildings with passive solar heating, natural ventilation, and efficient lighting systems.
  3. Patagonia - Applies green design by producing outdoor clothing from recycled and organic materials.

D. Target Sectors / Stakeholders

Product designers, architects, engineers, manufacturers, and consumers are the main stakeholders. Government agencies also support green design through standards and incentives for sustainable materials and energy use.

E. Scale of Operation

Green Design operates across local, national, and global scales ? influencing industrial production, urban planning, and consumer product development.
