When a group of 25 university students were asked what are the attributes, qualifications and skills needed of an 'environmental leader', these were their responses. They are presented as-is, without prioritization.
- Ability to facilitate dialogue and consensus
- Ability to act decisively
- Understand the cutting edge of the issue being discussed
- Willingness to participate directly, and "get-your-hands-dirty"
- Have a clear understanding of the objectives - 'hows and whys'
- Ability to listen and provide opportunity for all to speak
- Not to be self-serving
- To think of the cause and effects
- A desire to try and experiment
- To understand the value of 'empathy'
- To have asense of justice and equality
- To belive in fellow human beings (trust and dignity)
- To instill trust from people
- To extrapolate individual justice to the environment
- To avoid stereotyping
- To accept diversity in people
- To be flexible in accepting different viewpoints
- Ability to set agendas (political and others)
- Ability to set and implement timeframes
- To clearly understand the issues involved
- To develop effective dissemination skills
- To develop effective communication skills
- To communicate internationally (speak English?)
- To know the global trends
- To effectively network
- To identify stakeholders and resources
- Ability to package information that is useful
- To act as an information provider
- To think 'beyond specialization' - (beyond skills, beyond nation and beyond issues)
- Coordination skill - ability to juggle different actors, issues and objectives
- Understanding the interrelationships and causes-effects
- To be a 'proposer' and 'opportunity provider'
- Ability to interpret information and present ideas
- To have monitoring and evaluation skills
- Ability to articulate group learning techniques
