Demolition Waste

The construction and demolition industries are a major contributor to solid waste generation around the world, with the majority of waste arising in the demolition phase. In light of changing waste management attitudes and practices, the construction and demolition industry now has to manage waste in a legal, cost effective and environmentally friendly manner. Sustainable building and construction techniques used by companies to reduce construction and demolition waste embody the "Prevention Reduction, Reuse, Remanufacture and Recycle" philosophy.

The demolition phase of a building offers the best opportunity to capture and reuse materials. Studies have shown that reusing or recycling materials saves energy, money, conserves virgin resources and provides better protection for the environment.

CIB Deconstruction Task Group TG39 (Task Group) The Task Group focuses on the technical, economic, and policy issues required to foster disassembly rather than demolition of buildings, in order to make salvaged building materials a viable alternative to landfilling.
