IUCN: Marine and Coastal Programme
The goal of the Marine and Coastal Programme (MCP) is to contribute towards conservation of marine biodiversity by promoting, influencing and catalysing sustainable uses and equitable sharing of the resources as well as protecting the ecosystems , MCP's objectives are:
- Develop and implement a focused Union-wide marine and coastal programme.
- Establishment of active networks and partnerships for the implementation of the programme as well as tapping and/or increasing capacity in marine conservationa nd management
- Influence global debate and decisions concerning the conservation,m management ans sustainable use of marine and coastal resources.
The Programme is managed by a small secretariat at IUCN's headquarters (HQ) working closely with other HQ thematic programmes (CNG), members, commissions and partners and forms part of the Ecosystems management group in IUCN HQ. Field activities are implemente through IUCN's Regional and Country Offices (RCOs).

- Development of guidelines and technical manuals such as ICM, maps sustainable financing of marine conservation.
- Participation in global initiatives and debate on climate change, biodiversity, land-based activities impacting the health of the oceans, Chapter 17 of Agenda 21, Law of the Sea, straddling and migratory fish stocks, ballast water and invasive species etc.
